Benefits – Iptivia’s Network Intelligence Takes IP Assurance to a
New Level

The following examples illustrate how RouteDynamics significantly drives down the cost of assuring IP service levels by streamlining the problem identification/isolation/resolution process and by preventing future service disruptions.

Diagnose and resolve infrastructure congestion in record time.

An end-to-end service monitoring tool detects voice quality degradation on a given VoIP service and generates an alarm that is displayed in their primary operations console. From that console, IT staff directly invoke the RouteDynamics console in-context to verify that the path for that VoIP service is available and stable (e.g., has not been experiencing changes or deviations from its baseline). From there they invoke their performance reporting tool (i.e., focusing on the devices and resources identified by the service path) to get a consolidated view of the end-to-end IP performance as well as the network and equipment performance for all elements in the service delivery path. From this complete picture, IT staff rapidly isolate the source of the problem (e.g., congestion on one of the links in the path) and formulate a course of action for rapid resolution.

Quickly fix routing instabilities by uncovering root causes.

RouteDynamics detects and notifies IT staff about intermittent routing instabilities that are impacting a critical IP service – and which are not being picked up by traditional network management tools or end-to-end IP monitoring tools that rely on periodic sampling. Because RouteDynamics also identifies the specific router, interface or link that is causing the instability, IT staff quickly isolate and resolve the problem that is impacting the quality of the application but that had gone undetected by traditional tools.

Enable integrated service–infrastructure change management.

IT staff need to implement security upgrades to some network devices, but before they can do that, they need to identify critical services running over those network devices so that they can notify stakeholders, schedule downtime and engage the required change management processes for those services. By continuously tracking critical service paths, RouteDynamics maintains a persistently accurate mapping of those services to the supporting network elements, which it can export and maintain in the organization’s change management database (CMDB). Using this map, IT staff instantly identify all services that are running over those network devices.

Understand the full impact of maintenance changes before cutover to production.

After IT staff have performed their scheduled network maintenance, they need to verify that all critical services are up and restored to their intended operational state. By continuously tracking critical services, RouteDynamics instantly identifies and proactively alarms on any service paths that are broken or deviating from their intended paths, as well as the specific configuration change or failure that caused the anomaly. As a result, IT staff immediately verify the state of all critical service paths, identify those that were not properly restored, and correct the underlying configuration error before leaving the maintenance window and thus preventing a major service disruption.
